  1. Doesn’t setting up a water purification plant imply the use of many forms of technology?
I don’t know if its honest to prescribe the use of technology to set up life-sustaining systems and at the same time preach that its future development won’t help anyone and is a waste of time and resources.

  2. A solution that entails a dependency on a foreign manufacturer to supply crucial life-sustaining supplies has ulterior motives written all over it. Besides that it isn’t a solution if the problem in of itself isn’t solved, that being a lack of domestic infrastructure for water purification treatment plants. Solutions must be cheap and simple to work in an environment that is economically unsound and politically harsh. Technology isn’t conducive to either.

  3. This is exactly what I’m talking about. Unnecessary add-ons that contribute to the hard application of their solutions. Solutions these devices offer are impractical in that they require an infrastructure that only we can provide but furthermore the bottom line must be met and in doing so it is an inevitability that the expenses that go into making these devices outweigh the benefits.

  4. If you can’t see the connection between the technology used to make this robot and the technology used in the water filtration device, then you are not seeing the the whole picture, and if you can’t envision how the exact technology IN the robot itself will in turn be used to in other 3rd world aid devices, then you are indeed very small sighted.

  5. Go search “Michael Pritchard’s water filter” and then tell me how you can build a 25 nanometer filtration device without the use of technology.
How many windows computers do you reckon were used in the development of this product?

  6. Who’s standard of living has it increased? A vacuuming robot, a touchscreen cellular has increased the standard of living for those who die from diarrhea? This mentality in this part of the world that somehow trying to quick track the developing world when overlooking the most essential needs somehow deserves a pat on our back is ludicrous. You’re kidding yourself if you believe that technology has some egalitarian quality. It divides us from those below the equator always had, always will.

  7. Clarify to me where you see the connection between providing internet accessibility and providing clean drinking water? 1.1 billion people don’t have access to clean drinking water, 3 billion lack basic sanitation. That my friend is one huge problem we’ve been distracted from. A laptop, a windmill and getting free education means nothing if you can’t see the day after tomorrow because the most essential need of man is the number one priority on your mind.

  8. Mmmm look up the ‘one lap top per child’ project or the ‘hole in the wall’ projects.
These programs/projects bring the internet (technology) to 3rd world poverty stricken areas and grant them the opportunity to gain access to the worlds knowledge base. From building windmills to gaining free education.
In my opinion, it is ridiculous to say that technology hasn’t helped increase the standard of living, when it obviously has.

  9. I like robotics. I reckon those kind look awesome. Even though thats kol, call me when we make the T-100

  10. the end of humanity

  11. believe me, the market is one side but the engineers and scientits are something really different.
dont compare capitalists who have only a dollar note in the eyes with professional, enthusaisted engineers.
Steve wozniak, the chief engineer back in the day of apple hasnt give any shit about money…but steve jobs, who knows not a damn wthink about electronics was focused of making money, to become powerful

  12. And so starts …

  13. Not perfect running but it’s better than the first apes to walk upright 3 million years ago.

  14. So cool, come watch my new robot video ‘My Heart is Von Neumann” : )

  15. woman looks scary than robot

  16. Apple, Microsoft and any other technology we have in our pocket has done nothing to increase the standard of living. This pervasive mentality that somehow we live in an era of fantastic technological innovation means nothing, you can still have an i-pod an be homeless. Economic stability isn’t dependent on technology. Mere distractions.

  17. R&D isn’t fueled by altruism it’s fueled by economic incentive, the market these robots are being built for isn’t one that’s below the equator. We build things for a market that doesn’t need anything ie: most of the western world. I just have a problem with people labeling these toys as somehow the epitome of human ingenuity or whatnot, there is no meaningful purpose behind these things other than distracting the general population with bells and whistles.

  18. The internet is also full of bullshit information more pornography than ever and is a pristine arena for the pedophile looking for a quick fix. Expression of opinion from people who have no credibility and qualification is worth nothing. I’m not saying place an end to research and development I’m saying to invest in matters that need some crucial changing. Robots are unnecessary they’re a luxury for the the well to do western family.

  19. one thing is sure… toyota’s engeneers are ass kickers!

  20. I am not being naive, as a matter of fact, the internet that lets us so freely express our opinions, and opens us up to learn nearly anything that the human collective is aware of, was also initially made for military purposes. The world is not perfect, this is right, but to place an end to research and development will not do us any favors as a species, in my opinion.

  21. What an ideal world it would be if they were in fact used for that. Robots are primarily used for military purposes because leading investment comes from the DOD. The other purpose will for the most part be superficial, There’s more money in commercializing these things to the public than for any altruistic purpose. They’re toys or weapons, there’s no money in world saving so don’t be so naive.

  22. So your rationale is most of our problems are a result of lack of robots? The money and resources made to make these things can already help those who need help today. You’re basically saying lets invest in robots so we can fix the problems we have today, and I’m small-sighted? We take resources we have today and instead of directly using them to fix these problems we invest in something that may or may not work in the future, and I’m small-sighted.

  23. Who can bring food and water over long distance 24hours a day, 7 days a week? Who can make shelter lifting much more weight and eliminating the need for large equipment that cannot be used in many areas?

Robots will help mankind in many ways, don’t be so small sighted!

And this is how the world will end.

  25. The washing machine freed women from a fixed domestic position and gave them the time and energy to contribute to the economy. The computer is also a necessary tool in that it encompasses the attributes of the two inventions we just mentioned. It facilitates the human quality of sociability and acts as a tool that that when used frees time and makes things more efficient. The concept of a robot is one that is rooted in replacing man and all the roles that man play for something more efficient.
